- The Senegal Bichir, also known as the Common Bichir or Dinosaur Eel, represents the most prevalent species of Polypterus found in Africa. It thrives in various shallow water habitats across a vast geographic range.
- Renowned for its adaptability and intriguing appearance, the Senegal Bichir holds a prominent place in the aquarium hobby. It is widely sought after by enthusiasts and has become a staple in many aquarium setups worldwide
- Unlike some less common species, the Senegal Bichir has been successfully bred in captivity for years, particularly in Asian markets. This availability has contributed to its widespread popularity among aquarists
- One of the most prized variations of the Senegal Bichir is the albino variant. These specimens feature a striking appearance, characterized by a solid white or gold coloration with distinct pink eyes. Albino Senegal Bichirs are highly sought after as showpiece specimens in aquariums, adding a unique and eye-catching element to aquatic displays
- These fish are nocturnal bottom-dwellers, primarily active at night. They rely on senses other than sight for hunting, exhibiting poor eyesight but acute senses of smell and touch. The Senegal Bichir is characterized by its elongated body, bony plates covering its scales, and a row of dorsal finlets running along its back. Its prehistoric appearance, resembling that of an ancient eel, earns it the nickname "Dinosaur Eel."
- Despite its intimidating appearance, the Senegal Bichir is a popular choice for aquarium enthusiasts. It adapts well to captive environments and can thrive in large tanks with appropriate conditions.
