Monsieur Charles, (Hardcover)

"Monsieur Charles" provides a detailed historical and biographical examination of one of the most enduring mysteries of the French Revolution: the fate of the "Lost Dauphin," Louis XVII. Following the execution of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, the young prince remained a prisoner in the Temple, where official records state he died. However, decades of rumors and the emergence of several pretenders suggested that the heir to the French throne may have been spirited away to safety.

Author Eric Rede Buckley focuses the narrative on the life and claims of Karl Wilhelm Naundorff, the most famous and persistent of the claimants who sought recognition as the true Duke of Normandy. The work explores the intricate political landscape of the Bourbon Restoration and the complex web of evidence, secret communications, and royalist sympathies that surrounded the Naundorff affair. Through a careful analysis of the historical record, Buckley investigates the psychological and social factors that allowed the legend of the escaped prince to persist. "Monsieur Charles" is a fascinating study of identity, legitimacy, and the shadow cast by the fall of the French monarchy over the nineteenth century.

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
