The Barrister's Bookcase: Intelligent Furniture for the Home and Office

Author: Turback, Michael

Number Of Pages: 58

Details: A room without books is missing an essential feature, as important as lights, chairs, or pictures. Of course, a bookcase is a place for books, but it can do more than just house great volumes. It can both beautify a room and add to the room’s function, combining storage and style in the home. Just as the name suggests, barrister bookcases reflect their history in legal firms and courthouses. A true barrister’s bookcase is not actually a one-piece unit. It is a modular system of multiple shelving units stacked one on top of another. A library grows and a practical bookcase must grow with it. Expansion, as applied to bookcases, is a happy thought which meets the requirements of new and changing conditions. When one section is filled, you add another. For over 100 years, the ingenious barrister’s bookcase has been one of the finest ways to display a fine collection of books or treasured objects. These sectional, glass-front bookcases have provided fashionable storage maximizers, freestanding furniture pieces for a collected-over-time weave of hardbacks, sculpture, and mementos – the bits and pieces of a curious and full life. Offered is a short history of F. Edwin Hale and the splendid bookcases his company has built in Upstate New York since 1907.
