The Life of the Archpriest Avvakum by Himself, (Paperback)

"The Life of the Archpriest Avvakum by Himself" is a foundational masterpiece of Russian literature and a seminal text in the history of the Russian Orthodox Church. Written in the 17th century by the charismatic leader of the Old Believers movement, this candid autobiography recounts Avvakum's unwavering resistance against the liturgical reforms introduced by Patriarch Nikon. The narrative provides an intimate and raw account of the spiritual conviction, intense suffering, and eventual martyrdom of a man who refused to compromise his faith.

Known for its pioneering use of the vernacular Russian language rather than the traditional Church Slavonic, the work bridges the gap between medieval hagiography and the modern novel. Readers are given a vivid window into the socio-political and religious turmoil of 17th-century Russia, following Avvakum through his grueling exile to Siberia and his persistent defense of ancient traditions. This classic memoir remains a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit and a crucial historical document for understanding the Great Schism that divided Russian Christianity. It is essential reading for those interested in religious history, Russian culture, and the development of the autobiographical genre.

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
